Friday Faves # 7: Favorite Dessert

This week's topic is a yummy one coz we'll be sharing about our FAVORITE DESSERTS!!!!  Please include the Friday Faves badge on your post and place your link in the Linky Tool provided below.  May all of us have a sweety delish while blogging!

**************************

My favorite dessert is ice cream.  And believe it or not, I'd rather eat my ice cream before taking a meal!  That's because I don't want my ice cream to melt.  I super hate melted ice cream!  So I'd rather finish it up before it liquify infront of my eyes and craving taste buds!  It doesn't matter if its in a cup or cone or stick or in a sandwich/bread, as long as they are frozen just enough.  Chocolate and cheese are my best ice cream flavors.

Dairy Queen's Sandwich and Dilly's Bar are some of my favorites, and I mostly crave for them after work (which I am always tempted to buy everytime I got off the bus and I have no choice but to enter a mall and pass by a DQ shop).  I also like Nestle's new product, Heaven Ice Cream (as well as other Magnolia Nestle's ice creams because their frozen state shelf life outside the freezer is longer than other brands...well, it's just my observation).

Happy Friday Faves meme reading and blogging!

A Birthday Story (Happy Birthday to me!)

It's my birthday and I spent it while working. Hehe.  As much as I would like to take a bithday leave, I couldn't because I am coordinating a week long training at our office.  I still feel blessed because I got to spend it at our head office instead of spending it in an official business provincial trip (coz that would be sad, I wouldn't be able to be with my family).

I started the day with a smile from my husband, greeting "Happy Birthday" to me.  But then, the first one who really greeted me a Happy Birthday was my brother, Bob, who texted me at 12 midnight (duh, he might be in a midnight shift in call center that's why he was still awake that time!).  Next who greeted me through text was my parents who are currently taking care of my daughter Rian at Laguna for a week (as much as I would like my daughter to be with me during my birthday, I still decided to bring her to her grandparents' house in Laguna to take a short vacation again because I would be extra busy in my work this week because of my training program).

I was smiling when I got in the office so early in the morning because my husband drove me to the office (and that was about 6:00 am...my work starts a 8:00 am).  It was a very thoughful act, because my husband rarely drives me there! I passed by our building chapel to pray and thank God for giving me a new year.  After that, I slept on my desk for an hour and half.  And when I woke up, I brushed my teeth, put on my make up, and placed a big smile on my face, preparing for my day's task ahead.

Outside our office window.  It was 6 am but the sun alreaady shines so brightly, showering blessings on my birthday.  Thank you Lord for a wonderful special day.

Other greetings during the day came from my friends and mostly from FB friends (Facebook forwards me my wall messages.  Hey, the phone's still alerting until now! Gonna thank my friends later through my FB wall).  My officemates greeted me happily, some even visited me in the training room (which is at 11th floor of the office building.....  The Training Team's office is located at 7th floor, so just imagine, I was at 11th floor the whole day for the training!).  Of course, my participants also remembered my special day.  They were happy to have spaghetti for snack (I requested our caterer to serve it for our afternoon snack.  But don't get me wrong coz I didn't pay for it.  The training's snack is on the training budget!).  At lunchtime, I was surprised because I got these desserts---

The cake slice with cherry came from our new officemate, Grace.  The other cake slice came from the training's catering manager, Sir Zaldy.  The almond gelly came from another officemate, Sir Ariel.  Thank you guys for making this day a little more sweeter!

The best is yet to come.  My husband went home earlier than me and he started to cook pesto pasta (as he promised to me).  When I came home, dinner was served.  I celebrated the birthda dinner with the whole household (my husband with my in-laws).

The pesto pasta was my hubby's cooking product for the night!  The cake's not opened yet when I took this photo and the crispy pata's still on the stove and still sizzling!

A happy happy day for me, indeed even though my birthday week would be a busy training week for me!  29 years of existence...more to come bceause I'm sooo excited to live my life with my loved ones--- my husband, Jeff and my daughter, Rian.

Mommy Moments: My toddler's eating like a big kid na!

mommy moments

My daughter loves eating something new.  And now that she's a toddler, she sometimes want to try to eat independently.  She would snatch the spoon or fork from my hands and try to eat her food by herself.  To describe her meal and snack time whenever she does that, it's absolutely messy!  She throws food then she'll try to scoop it again with her spoon or fork, then she would try to eat it (of course, I would take away the food before it land in her mouth).  There are times that she's really a good mannered little girl, she's really serious in getting food to reach her mouth using the kubyertos.  It just that sometimes, it pisses her off when the food drops on the floor. Hehe.  Pizza and pancake are the best heavy snacks we can serve her because we would just divide them into bits so that she can use her fork to get it, without her being irritated.  She also loves finger foods for snacks, especially biscuits and Iced Gem (remember it? Hehe).

Sharing to you some of my daughter's candid shots while eating pizza:

Below's photo is quite a funny shot I got while my daughter was eating a fried potato on stick.  She actually ate it as if she's eating isaw!  We were all wondering how in the world did she learn the usual way to eat food on the stick! Hehe...

Yummy Mommy Moments everyone! :)

Fun at Trade Fairs

I'm beginning to like visiting Trade Fairs eversince I got to experience it first hand in my former work in an non-government organization few years ago.  Since the former NGO I worked for provides training and consultancy services to micro and small entrepreneurs, we were able to be invited to join business trade fairs.  So when our office had a booth in a trade fair held at SM Megamall, we also had a chance to tour around the fair and got freebies, free food tastes, and lots and lots of fliers and brochures.  It was not the first time I had been in a trade fair but it's the first time wherein I got to appreciate being in it.  The second time was when my husband attended a Wedding Fair at SM Megamall few years back when we were interested in checking out how much would we spend in our dream wedding (we were in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship back then).  I had fun especially when we entered the fair and a lady came to us and ask if when are we getting (our ID's says bride-to-be ad groom-to-be so wala kaming kawala sa question!).  She also asked if it's ok to interview us, and I said yes.  Suddenly, she got a microphone and welcomed us in the fair.  Then she interviewed us with the whole place hearing us.  I didn't know if I should get embarrased or proud, but anyway, we just answered her questions politely.  The interview didn't last long but I was impressed with her idea of selling her services that way (she's running a wedding coordinationg and hosting service, by the way)...it was unique!  Anyway, after we had a tour inside the fair, we got home with lots of fliers and brochures and some freebies.  After a month or so, we visited again another Wedding Fair somewhere at Roxas Blvd (I forgot the name of the place, but it's beside CCP).

Just a few months back, I learned from Smart Parenting website that a Mommy Fair would be held at Alabang Town Center, sponsored by Mommy Mundo.  I decided to go there, since it was just near our place at Alabang.  I actually dragged my husband there (he was not that all excited to go there, but he got interested when we tour around the fair, anyway) because I really wanted to get nice freebies (and I got tons! Hehe).

A freebie photo shot during the Mommy Fair at ATC

Two weeks ago, my officemate got a complimentary tickets for the Food Fair at World Trade Center.  She invited me for a company.  Since World Trade Center is just beside our office building, I gladly accepted her invitation.  It was a destressing activity for us and we truly enjoyed it.  I bought some blueberry and banana cupcakes, jellyaces, and Twistix potato on stick for my darling daughter, and blueberry cheesecake and chips for me and my hubby (so just imagine, I went home with a shopping bag full of pasalubong and brochures / fliers. hehe)

A shot with a mascot at the Food Fair at World Trade Center

And just after a week, I learned that there was a Filipino Franchise Fair at World Trade Center and I couldn't resist to visit WTC once again.  I invited my officemates to come with me and for just 100 Php per head, we were able to tour inside the fair and get information, fliers, and brochures on franchising different shops.  We weren't able to get more food tastes because it was almost closing hours, but we enjoyed each others company.  Another destressing activity for us.  I hope my officemate would upload our photots there so I can share them with you.

Now I'm thinking, what could be the best franchise my husband and I can purchase? Hmmm...

New Blog Launching: A Food Blog for Toddlers

I'm launching my new blog site here at Blogger, entitled: Food for the Tots.  Though I know how to cook, I'm not really into that hobby.  But since my toddler, who is now one year old, already starts to eat adult food, and I observe that she's beginning to get weary of eating plain lugaw with mashed veggies (well, who wouldn't get tired of it if you eat the same menu in every meal, everyday!), I decided to take some action to interest my daughter in eating more food.  It's time for yummy, varied, but still healthy meals.  That's why I begin to be a "cooking" mom who researches and experiments all new meals for my little one.  She has to gain at least 2 more pounds this month!

And of course, I would like my cookings to be recorded and making a blog about it is a smart move.  By this, I could also even share something for all the mommies out there.

Visit my new cooking site at: http://mommyvanenirecipes.blogspot.com/.  Happy reading! and may your little ones enjoy the recipes as much as my toddler do! :)

New Food Recipe for my Toddler

While I was writing this, I was also doing a research for food recipes for my 1 year old daughter.  She probably is bored with her daily menu (plain lugaw + veggies) because she lately couldn't finish a bowl.  That's why I decided to research, plan and introduce new recipes that she may like.  After my research, I thought of simple recipes that could be easily prepared even by the maids (and even edible for adults!)

Cheesy scrambled eggs
A hearty breakfast recipe

scrambled eggs + cheddar cheese + veggies (gonna start to introduce ampalaya and tomatoes to her!), bits of sausage or ham + butter (instead of cooking oil).

Fruity Mashy Snack
Delicious and yummy

mashed fruits (can be avocado, banana, or apple) + my baby's formula milk (not condensed or evaporated milk) + cereal (Cerelac-- wheat and milk or chicken and veggies or any flavor...but I think the wheat and milk flavor is the best because adults like the taste of it...I know because I tried to eat it too...haha!) + small amount of honey (not sugar).

Tinola / Sinigang / Nilagang Baka
A taste of adult food
Soup of Tinola / Sinigang / Nilagang baka + rice + bits of chicken / pork / beef + mashed veggies (malunggay, zayote, potato, papaya, etc.)

Munggo Galore
Healthy meal again

the usual munggo recipe + rice.  I haven't tried this yet but I hope my daughter would love eating it.

Pasta Perfect
A taste of  Italian food

Pizza - my daughter loves pizzas!
the usual Spaghetti / Carbonara recipe
the usual Mac and Cheese recipe

The next step I would do is to plan weekly meals.  And I pray that my daughter would have a healthy appetite because she still needs 2 kg to reach her supposed-to-be-normal weight at 1 year old, which is 10 kilos.

Happy eating baby Rian!

Food Safety in the House

My husband is the one who cooks meals while I am the one who wash the dishes.  He practically owns the kitchen, while I practically own the rest of the house (haha!).  Yup, he's the cook...but I'm his trainer.  I was the one who taught him to cook--- adobo, sinigang, and his favorite tinola.  And since he has found a passion for cooking, I just let him do the kitchen thing.  Now, he prepares meals other than what I taught to him (his favorite dish to prepare is Japanese!).  Of course, he searches recipes from the internet.  But the recipe is just the thing he learns.  I believe there's much more to learn about being a chef/cook other than the recipe itself.  One must also be informed about food safety to prevent foodborne illnesses.

I became an employee of a food service company, and I was the one who started to create their manual on Food Safety.  That's why I was very particular in that aspect.  As my husband's "trainer", I always remind him the right way to handle foods so that the meals he would prepare would not just be delicious, but also safe to eat.  He follows my advice...but only for a while.  Probably because he wants his food to be done as fast as he can.  Napapakunot noo nalang ako kapag hindi nya sinusunod yung mga sinasabi ko.  I just tell myself that someday, I'll make him attend cooking classes so that he would learn the importance of food safety rules.

Here is the list of some Do's and Don'ts in handling foods:

1. First rule in cooking: wash your hands!

2. To lessen bacteria in thawing meats, do not soak meat in water.  It's better if you just leave it in a container for few hours at room temperature (but not overnight!) or better yet, place the meat in the refrigerator/chiller overnight.

3. In thawing, place the meat in the lowest part of the refrigerator shelf and away from other foods so that contamination would be avoided.  Remember, raw meats have bacteria in them.

4. Use separate knife and chopping board to chop vegetables and cut meats.  If you only have 1 knife and chopping board, cut first the veggies then the raw meats.

5. Always check the expiration date of the items you buy!

6.  First in, first out rule: use the oldest item first before the ones you recently bought.

7. Avoid placing food on the floor, even though they are in a container or plastic bag.  Dusts and insects could climb on it...you never know.  Place them on the kitchen counter or table.

8.  Store your foods promptly.  For refrigerator storage chart, you can use this link: http://www.homefoodsafety.org/pages/utilities/docs/rf_storage_chart.pdf.  For shelf life of leftover foods, open this link: http://www.homefoodsafety.org/pages/utilities/docs/calculator.pdf.  Wow, I can't wait to print and stick them on our refrigerator!

9.  When purchasing canned and bottled goods, check, not only their expiry date but also their form.  If there are dents, cracks, or other malformations/deformities, do not purchase them.  (Dents can be a sign of chemical reactions in the container which can be harmful to the body).

10.  Keep the kitchen area clean after preparing meals.  This is to avoid insects to crawl all over the place.

For more information on food safety tips, you can visit http://www.homefoodsafety.org/.

Food safety should not just be contained in food service and food manufacturing, but should also be practiced at home.  It's important because our children would eat the foods we personally prepare...and of course, we wouldn't want our children to have foodborne diseases (and we don't want tummy aches on ourselves too!).  The enjoyment of eating is in the hands of the food maker.  I'll make my husband realize that more.
